Little Free Libraries
When the editors at Reader's Digest made a list of the "50 Surprising Reasons We Love America" for a cover story, they placed Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at No. 50, Bill Gates at No. 25, and at No. 11, sandwiched between sliced bread and tumbleweeds, was Little Free Library, an international phenomenon started by late Rotary member Todd Bol.
Little Free Libraries have been set up all around the world to give communities 24/7 access to books and to encourage book exchanges in the local neighbourhood, building community and sharing resources. The project aims to inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighbourhood book exchanges around the world. The first LFL in the City of Vincent was set up in Anzac Road in Mount Hawthorn by Theresa Youngs-Lachmund in 2015. It is still in operation and has now moved to 58 Norfolk Street in Mount Lawley.
The Rotary Club of Mount Lawley is in the middle of building 10 Little Free Libraries to be placed in our local community. Construction is complete and we are now in the process of underpainting. We will soon be painting the 10 LFLs and finding homes for them in our local area. Once they are complete, we will add the ones that are placed in the Town of Vincent to the Transition Town Vincent map, along with posting their locations on our website.
