We thought we'd share with you some answers to the TOP 10 myths we bump into out in the community.
MYTH 1 - Rotary is a secret society with an official creed.
TRUTH - Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret meetings and no secret rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others.
MYTH 2 - Rotary is exclusively a male only organization.
TRUTH - Rotary started as a male-only organization but changed its constitution several decades ago. Today women play an incredibly important role in Rotary, leading from the front as Club Presidents and District Governors.
MYTH 3 - You have to be older to join Rotary.
TRUTH - Most clubs include Rotarians in their 20's, 30’s and 40’s, as well as older members who have been committed to Rotary for a long time.
MYTH 4 - Members must own a business.
TRUTH - This is untrue. Members include teachers, nurses, Government employees, real estate agents and a people from all walks of life with a diverse range of skills - all committed to helping others and building a better community.
MYTH 5 - Rotary is boring.
TRUTH - Rotary is FUN. Every meeting is FUN. Club projects are FUN. Social activities are FUN. Service is FUN. Join like-minded people committed to helping others and enjoying themselves at the same time.
MYTH 6 - You have to be rich to join Rotary.
TRUTH - Net worth is not a prerequisite to being a Rotarian. All you need is a desire to serve your fellow man.
MYTH 7 - Rotarians are not friendly.
TRUTH - In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic needs, the need for friendship and fellowship. We are a network of individuals who enjoy working together and mixing with our communities.
MYTH 8 - Rotarians need to be good public speakers.
TRUTH - Rotary develops confidence in people to allow them to speak in public as required. In addition, support is available if you wish to develop further skills in public speaking.
MYTH 9 - Rotary is all about business.
TRUTH - Rotary is about service to others. Businesses do get involved. But so do many everyday working people and retirees.
MYTH 10 - Rotary is a local group.
TRUTH - Rotary is a worldwide organization of 32,000+ clubs and 1.2 million members. A worldwide network that you have access to as a Rotarian.
